About Small Talk U
Small Talk U builds language and literacy skills in children from birth to five years of age by collaborating with parents and educators, providing researched based techniques, educating community partners and raising awareness of normal language and literacy development.
Literacy is vital to success in life. More than any other skill, the ability to read allows a child to succeed in school, learn about the world and function in society. The foundations of literacy are laid early in life. Beginning in infancy and continuing through the preschool years, a fascinating and complex process of cognitive and language development occurs. This process establishes the critical communication skills from which reading and writing will grow.
Small Talk U targets literacy development proactively in young children from birth to five. Using a unique, consultative approach, Small Talk U fosters language and literacy skills by empowering parents, the most important teachers of children. Parents are taught language building strategies and shown how to incorporate those strategies into their child’s daily activities. We combine research from multiple complimentary disciplines such as music, neurology, linguistics, and developmental specialties to provide well-rounded, individualized programs for parents. In addition Small Talk U provides consulting services for educators in a variety of institutions. Our collaborative approach builds upon existing literacy programs in schools using a combination of in-classroom work with teachers as well as training outside of the classroom.
